The history of Nishijin-Senbon area in Kyoto as a commercial district goes back to the time of capital Heiankyo (founded in 794 A.D.), where today’s Senbon-dori Street was known as Suzaku-oji Street, running right through the middle of the ancient city.
The nostalgic elegance of the old times can still be felt in every street corners, with the faint sound of machines weaving Nishijin silk reaching the ears of passers-by.
